Flowers add comfort and warmth to our homes, but they won’t last long without proper care. It is discouraging to come home and find your flowers wilted or drooping. But you can keep them alive even if you plan to be away for a few days. Your flowers will stay fresh with some planning and a few easy tips. We have prepared some practical tips from florists and flower fans that can make a real difference.

Things to Do Before You Go

You should take these steps as soon as you bring flowers home.

  • Prepare a vase. Cut flowers can get damaged by bacteria quickly. This is why the vase has to be washed with water and soap and then dried completely. A dirty vase is not good for cut flowers.

  • Cut the ends of the stems. Do it carefully with scissors or a knife and cut only 1- 2 inches from the bottom of each stem. The cut should be made at a 45-degree angle.

  • Remove leaves. You should take off any leaves that will be under the water. Otherwise, these leaves will rot quickly. This way, you can keep the water clean and free from bacteria.

  • Use room-temperature water for your flowers. Too hot or too cold water can shock the stems and shorten the life of the flowers.

You can also prepare a special solution for water. Add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and ¼ teaspoon of bleach to 1 liter of water. The sugar feeds the flowers, the lemon helps them absorb water, and the bleach slows bacteria growth. It only takes a minute to prepare this mix and prolong the life of your flowers.

Pick the Best Place at Home

Fresh flowers will not last long in the heat. They do not like direct sunlight or drafts either, as all these things make your flowers wilt faster. The best approach is to keep flowers at moderate temperatures. Avoid places near the heaters, fireplaces or air conditioners. A room that faces north works best. If your house gets warm, put the vase on the floor (where it's cooler) or in a cooler hallway.

There is one method that is used by florists. They often put flowers in the fridge for the night. You can do the same, but do not keep your flowers close to any fruits. You can leave the vase in the fridge if you’re away for a night. This works especially well for roses, carnations, and chrysanthemums. However, don’t do it if you go for a longer vacation.

Provide Enough Water

Flowers need water all the time; otherwise, they get very dry very fast. You can try the upside-down water bottle trick. Use a soda bottle that’s about 1–2 liters. Fill it with water and add flower food. Turn the bottle upside down and place the opening into the vase. Use tape or string to secure it so it doesn’t tip over.

As the water level in the vase drops, the bottle lets out more water. This keeps the flowers from drying out. It’s a simple way to make a self-watering system at home. The bottle can keep flowers watered for about five to ten days.

You can also use watering globes or spikes. These are glass or plastic tools you fill with water and place in the soil or a vase. They slowly drip water on the flowers. They are cheap and easy to find in many stores.

If you’ll be gone for a long time, ask a neighbor or a friend to check on the flowers every few days. They can add water and remove dead flowers to keep everything looking nice.

Choose Flowers That Last

Flowers are not all the same. Some flowers can stay nice and fresh for a time, other needs too much care. If you are going to be away from home, pick durable flowers.

  • Roses and gerbera daisies. These are the most popular long-lasting blooms. Many modern roses last longer than you may even think, and gerbera daisies can also look fresh for at least a week.

  • Orchids and lilies. If you want something more elegant, try orchids or lilies. Elegant orchids last a long time, and lilies slowly open their buds and last for many days.

  • Chrysanthemums. These last a very long time. They need only a basic case and can stay fresh for two to three weeks. It’s the most reliable choice.

  • Carnations and alstroemeria. These are strong and dependable flowers. Carnations are tough and affordable. Alstroemeria also keep blooming as new buds open slowly.

If you are going to be away from home for more than a few days, avoid tulips, hydrangeas or poppies. These flowers do not last long, and they will probably wilt.

Things You Should Better Avoid

It’s also important to know what things to avoid before you leave.

  • Many people use home remedies. Online, you will find advice to use aspirin, for example. However, it will only harm the flowers if you add it without exact measurements. It’s much safer to use special flower food, as it comes with the right balance of nutrients.

  • Carefully choose the place for your flowers. Keep them away from fruit bowls, as ripe fruits give off a gas that makes flowers age faster. Also, never put them near warm electronics or heat sources.

  • Don’t add more water to old, cloudy water. Always change the water completely before you leave. Fresh, clean water is a must if you want your flowers to last.

Refresh Your Flowers After Travel

Even if you diligently follow all the above instructions, your flowers may look a little tired after the journey. But it’s not difficult to refresh them:

  • Empty the old water and rinse the vase thoroughly. Give each stem a new diagonal cut to reopen water channels.

  • Fill the vase with lukewarm water and add fresh flower food. Then return your bouquet to its usual spot.

  • Also, spray cool water over the petals or give the entire bouquet a gentle rinse under the tap. Gently dry the petals with a paper towel.

These simple steps help restore your flowers. The fresh cuts help water absorption, and the new flower food provides essential nutrients. This quick care routine will make your blooms look like new within hours.
